The sad clown paradox: A theory of comic transcendence
نویسندگان
چکیده
One prevailing cultural sensibility of our time is a concern with the state mental health, another obligation and desire for good ‘sense humour’. At present two are conflated, most often through long-standing trope: sad clown paradox – those who make us laugh tend to be prone health problems. This article views ‘sad paradox’ as less about peculiarity or exceptional status comedian's mind, more how cognitive burdens modernity rendered bearable collectively recognised in thought sentiment by humour. Accounts comedy conflate anguish. By unpacking this knotted relationship, it argued that humour performs way contemporary people deal modernity's fragmentary character life from within their own inner worlds selves.

Enjoyment of negative emotions in music is seen by many as a paradox. This article argues that the paradox exists because it is difficult to view the process that generates enjoyment as being part of the same system that also generates the subjective negative feeling. Compensation theories explain the paradox as the compensation of a negative emotion by the concomitant presence of one or more p...
متن کاملToward a Theory of Comic Book Communication
In an October 15, 1986, appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman," Harvey Pekar, writer of the autobiographical comic book American Splendor, expressed the potential of the comic book medium in clear, simple terms: "It’s words and pictures. You can do anything you want with words and pictures" (Witek 154) Comic books are a unique and powerful form of communication. Perhaps long-time comic...
متن کاملGero-transcendence: a reformulation of the disengagement theory.
This article offers a meta-theoretical reformulation of the disengagement theory. It is argued that what social gerontologists describe in negative terms and label "disengagement" is in reality often a positive development towards gero-transcendence. This latter can be described as a shift in meta-perspective from a materialistic and rational view to a more cosmic and transcendent one, normally...
